St. Christina of Bolsena

Circa 1690
Church of St. Rupert, Weißpriach, Austria

The snake is one of St. Christina's attributes. In her Passio a sorcerer makes four serpents run upon her. Two of them bind her feet while the other two hang onto her breasts and suck like infants; this may be what the artist is suggesting more modestly by picturing her with her hand on her bosom.

In the background on the lower left are Bolsena and its lake. Christina's pagan father had tried to drown her there when she would not renounce her Christian faith.
